Catalogue Note

"My paintings strive to capture a person's process of growing up and the experience they go through, as well as how they are influenced by the time period in which they lived... I take away most of the colour... because I want my paintings to be a memory or a realization of something."
Zhang Xiaogang in conversation with Anjali Rao, 'Interview with Zhang Xiaogang on Talk Asia', on CNN International, 20 July 2007
