Condition

Colour: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate, although the overall tonality is slightly brighter and more vibrant, with the yellow throughout tending more towards sunshine yellow in the original. The catalogue illustration does not fully convey the three dimensionality and rich texture apparent in the original. Condition (according to the correct orientation of the piece: centre and right hand panel are upside down in the catalogue illustration): This work is in very good condition. (i) There is evidence of some light canvas wear to places along the extreme edges and corner tips, with a few associated isolated minor paint losses in places. Close examination reveals a few further tiny paint losses to the thicker passages of yellow and white paint. A few scattered light rub marks are visible to the lower edge and in a few places of the extreme vertical edges. A number of tiny media accretions appear to the upper centre of the top left quadrant. (ii) Each of the extreme edges is slightly worn in places with a few associated small media losses, notably to the upper extreme edge, to the lower part of the right extreme edge and to the left side of the lower extreme edge. There are a number of small paint losses at the centre of the top third of the canvas. There is a light vertical rub mark at the top of the left extreme edge, a further horizontal rub mark at the centre of the top overturn edge, and a further rub mark at the lower centre of the left extreme edge. (iii) Each of the four extreme edges and extreme corner tips is slightly worn with some associated small media losses, notably to the upper edge and lower extreme edges. Close examination reveals a short vertical crack to the top right extreme corner tip,a fine crack to the lower part of the lower left quadrant and a few tiny losses to the grey impasto at the centre of the composition. There are three tiny media accretions to the centre of the upper horizontal section and another to the centre of the lower right quadrant. Some fine surface dust fibres are adhering in places to the impastoed areas. No restoration is visible under ultraviolet light.
