Condition

Colour: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate, although the overall tonality is softer, with the orange vase tending more towards clementine, the blue sky passage to the background and to the tip of one of the tulips to sky-blue, the pink tulips to the lower left quadrant more to intense baby-pink in the original. The catalogue illustration does not fully convey the richly textured impasto present in the composition, particularly to the vase, the tulips, the leaves and the black pigment passages. Condition: This work is in very good condition. There are a few extremely fine hairline cracks visible upon close inspection: to places on the extreme overturn edges, towards the bottom of left extreme edge, to the left of the rim of the vase and in a few places elsewhere. A fine vertical tension crack with raised edges is visible to the top part of the left extreme edge and there are three tiny associated pigment losses towards the top edge. Two fine feather cracks are visible on close inspection: one an intermittent vertical crack with raised edges to the centre of the left extreme edge and the other to the centre of the rim of the vase. On close inspection there are two tiny media losses at the lower part of the right extreme edge. There is a very small isolated matrix of stable craquelure to the black pigment just above the flowers. No evidence of restoration is apparent under ultraviolet light.
