Condition

Colour: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate, although the overall tonality is slightly richer and deeper, with the background of the central panel tending more towards ivory in the original. Condition: Each panel is in very good conditioon. (i) There is a tiny canvas indentation to the top left quadrant and a further tiny indentation above the lower edge on the left side of the lower right quadrant. There are a few spots of wear to the composition: two spots to the lower left quadrant, one speck towards the top of the upper left quadrant, another to the bottom of the upper right quadrant and a few further minute specks elsewhere. (ii) There are faint handling marks in places to the extreme edges. Close examination reveals several small light rub marks: adjacent to the top right corner on the right edge, to the centre of the top edge, to the lower left corner and to the top left corner. There is a tiny canvas protrusion to the right side of the top horizontal section, just above the red line of media, and a tiny indentation to the centre of the top extreme edge. No restoration is apparent under ultraviolet light. (iii) On close inspection there are two very small media accretions to the left of centre on the upper extreme edge, three spots of wear to the centre on the lower extreme edge and a faint rub mark to the centre to the top edge. Faint parallel stretcher bar marks are visible across the central vertical axis.
