Condition

Colour: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate, although the overall tonality is brighter and more vibrant, with the blue of the sponge tending more towards electric IKB blue in the original. The purple hues in the catalogue illustration are not present on the original. Condition: This work is in very good condition. Close examination reveals a minute rub mark to the lower right side of the reverse, light surface dirt to some of the protruding parts and a few fine surface dust fibres adhering in places to the recesses and around the outer edges. There are a few tiny abrasions to the lower part of the metal rod and some light tarnishing and minor rub marks in places to the metal base.

"Thanks to the sponges - living, savage material - I was able to make portraits of the readers of my monochromes who, after having seen, after having travelled in the blue of my paintings, come back totally impregnated in sensibility like the sponges..." (The artist in Sidra Stich, Yves Klein, Ostfildern 1994, p. 165)
