"Noland ha percorso una stretta linea di confine: se il ricorso a strutture primarie e alla radicalità della strisica di colore come stilema necessario e sufficiente alla pittura moderna ha aperto il campo alla 'pittura analitica' europea (...), d'altro canto l'artista americano ha sempre mantenuto le distanze dall'asepsi esecutiva e dal gioco percettivo della optical-art, altra forma di possibile 'distrazione'.
