STRUCTURE Original canvas, slightly loose in its stretcher and undulating. PAINT SURFACE There is scattered craquelure, particulalry running down the right hand side of the painting. Also thinning to the paint, mostly to the darker areas of paint along the lower border and to the brown chest of drawers. ULTRAVIOLET UV light reveals a spot of retouching to a small dent and resultant paint damage on the portrait at the centre of the composition and the same to a small dent in the lower left. There is also sweeping retouching to the background. FRAME Held in a simple gold composite frame with some losses to the moulding.
