Condition
Canvas has been relined and is sound. Some frame abrasion and assoicated paint loss to the edges, most noticable to the left edge. Craquelure and spots of surface dirt visible throughout. Paint texture has been flattened due to relining, most noticable to the figure's hair and face. Ultraviolet light reveals one patch of retouching running vertically above the figure, and a scattering elsewhere. Held in an ornate, gold-painted, composite frame.

This portrait depicts the composer William Herbert Mervyn Roberts (known as Mervyn Roberts), son of Sir John Herbert Roberts, 1st Baron of Clwyd and one of Clausen's patrons. A number of sketches for this painting are still held by the Royal Academy.
