Condition

The canvas has been lined. There are some suggestions of repaired tears in the upper left and upper right sections. There is some minor frame abrasion and cracking of the paint to the extreme edges. There are craquelure and stretcher marks visible. Surface dirt and a discoloured varnish throughout. There are some minor areas of paint separation in places, particularly to the boats. Ultraviolet light reveals areas of overpainting to the left hand side of the sky, and retouching to the sky corresponding with old repairs and infilling elsewhere. Held in a decorative gold composite frame.
