Catalogue Note

La collection de la Gilman Paper Company fut constituée par Howard Gilman (1924-1998), collectionneur, philanthrope et ancien directeur de la Gilman Company. Il collectionna pendant vingt ans négatifs et tirages originaux de photographies (1977-1997). Cette collection fut transmise au Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York.
Cet ouvrage rassemble les reproductions de 102 photographes (dont un anonyme) des XIXe et XXe siècles, précurseurs et innovateurs de la technique photographique dont Charles Nègre, Nadar, Gustave Le Gray, Robert Capa, Walker Evans ou Edward Steichen. Les tirages ont été réalisés par Richard Benson, ami de Paul Strand dont il développait également des photographies.
