Another rolwagen with a similar decoration, from the Butler family Collection is illustrated in Julia B.Curtis Chinese porcelains of the 17th century, landscapes, scholar's motifs and narratives, University of Washington press, China Institue gallery, New York city 1995 no.60 p.142. As identified by Dr.Curtis, the scene depicts the Emperor Yao, the first king of the mythical China's Golden Age, asking Xu You, a sage here depicted in the appearance of a young cowherd, to assume the reins of government.
