Catalogue Note

This incised candlestick belongs to a rare group of early Ottoman metalwork. Related examples are found in the Freer Gallery of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum, (see Atil, Chase and Jett 1985, p.191-192, no.27 and fig. 66; and Petsopoulos 1982, pl.22). The motifs used on all three candlesticks, demonstrates the rich artistic vocabulary that was in use during the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II (1481-1512). Similar decoration can be found on bindings, ceramics and tiles from this period.
