Description

  • An Etruscan Bronze Candelabrum
  • Height 45 1/4 in. 115 cm.; height of finial 4 5/16 in. 11 cm.
cast in five sections, with tripod leonine feet resting on beaded round bases and joining at the top in an echinus molding decorated with engraved tongues and beading, slender faceted stem surmounted by an openwork disk, and beaded and molded spool with four projecting arms each terminating in a lotus-bud shaped pricket, the finial in the form of a cock standing alertly on a circular base with beaded border, talons splayed, the feathers indicated by rows of crescentic incisions and short striations, his head with sharply pointed beak, prominent wattle, and low notched crest.

prickets on lotus buds mostly fragmentary, modern cement visible in interstices suggest that stem and base were reattached in modern times as well as spool and finial, two of the lotus buds have spots of bronze disease, otherwise very good and as shown
