- Two Byzantine Mosaic Fragments
- 32 by 37 1/2 and 33 1/2 by 41 1/2 in. 81.3 by 95.2 and 85.1 by 105.4 cm.
depicting in multicolored tesserae a fragmentary tree(?) motif flanked by two peacocks, a coot(?), a fowl, and two leafy flowering branches.
Provenance
acquired in 1969 by the present owner from Asfar Bros., Hotel St. George, Beirut [inv. nos. 255 and 256]
Condition
Tesserae (which include glass ones) set in heavy modern concrete slab, a few isolated tesserae missing, note area of old wax or varnish turned yellow in lower left corner on right panel, excess grout covers parts of tesserae in most areas especially on right panel.
