  • A Byzantine Mosaic Roundel, Syria
  • Diameter 49 1/2 in. 125.7 cm.
depicting in multicolored tesserae a gadrooned basin resting on a high pedestal and flanked by two peacocks, two birds perched on the rim.

Provenance

acquired in 1969 by the present owner from Asfar Bros., Hotel St. George, Beirut [inv. no. 186]

Condition

Tesserae set in heavy modern concrete slab, area comprising left corner of basin, tail of small bird at left, and some background area above right peacock's head restored, also restored is entire right edge of panel including half of peacock and legs, other minor restorations elsewhere, colors in catalogue are more vivid than in reality
