  • Length of bull 2 7/8 in. 7.3 cm.; height of Apollo (from modern base) 6 1/4 in. 15.9 cm.
comprising a Greek figure of a bull, with long dewlap, triangular ears, and tail resting on its right hindquarter, and a Roman figure of Apollo standing with the weight on his right leg and holding the kithara in his left arm.

Condition

Apollo has abraded nose and is missing his right hand, which would have held the plektron, surface somewhat worn, corroded, and waxy in most areas; bull: surface uneven and corroded, engraved details on proper right eye and proper left horns still visible underneath thin corrosion layer, several small spots of benign bronze disease on right legs, one on tail, and one on underbelly

Catalogue Note

In the original photograph used for pl. XIX of the December 1976 auction catalogue the bronze bull had a label tied to the proper left leg reading on one side "FEB. BR. / Bronze bull from Thebes / No. 6;" the catalogue entry specifies: "found in the Temple of the Cabiri, Thebes."
