Catalogue Note

For most of her career, Ryan was a poet and writer of fiction.  She was almost 50 when she began painting.  Encouraged by her bohemian artist friends and neighbors in Greenwich Village, Tony Smith and Hans Hoffmann among them, she experimented in various styles.  Under the influence of William Stanley Hayter, the British Surrealist and printmaker, she joined his Atelier 17 in 1941.   There, she immersed herself in the exciting, new techniques and styles of the 1940s and was particularly drawn to automatism and surrealism.  The present painting is a particularly fine example from this period in her career.
