Catalogue Note

The story of Phaeton appealed to De Lue and he used the myth as a subject several times, both in his sculpture and drawings.  He was particularly intrigued by the possibilities in portraying a figure falling through space.  He created Phaeton I in 1960; the present and subsequent version in 1972.  In this latter version, the remarkable twisting, spiralling figure is arranged around a vertical axis but with no frame of reference and is meant to be seen from all sides, a true figura serpentina.
