Catalogue Note
Lisa Peters notes: "[Twachtman] used his drawing skills not to describe natural elements but to convey their essence through an expressive use of line and spatial juxtaposition ... In L'Etang, he did not merely record the features of the pond but conveyed its quiet harmony by capturing the echoing pattern of the blurred outlines of windswept trees silhouetted against the sky and the even softer shifting reflections of trees in the water below" (John Henry Twachtman: An American Impressionist, 1999, p. 65-68).
