Catalogue Note

The marshy area depicted is actually outside of Newburyport proper, which had no marshes. Like Martin Johnson Heade, Bricher used the words "marshes" and "meadows" interchangeably when referring to this area. A similar version of this work in oil entitled Hunter in the Meadows of Old Newburyport, Massachusetts is in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, Spain.
