Catalogue Note

This work originally appeared as a cover of Popular Magazine in 1923. After the picture was returned from the publisher, Wyeth changed the proportion of the painting by trimming off the bottom, and the signature, while adding to the two sides, alterations consistent with the artist's practices. Christine Podmaniczky notes "The artist loaned this painting to Horatio Moss of New York in 1936, believing that Moss could sell the work or the reproduction rights. In 1938 Wyeth requested the return of the painting for an upcoming exhibition, but according to Andrew Wyeth, it was never returned. It appeared next in 1949 in a Palm Beach, Florida collection with the signature Pyle" (Christine Podmaniczky, N.C. Wyeth: Catalogue RaisonnĂ© of Paintings, 2008, p. 447).
