Catalogue Note

Captain William Drummond Stewart hired Alfred Jacob Miller as the official artist of his 1837 expedition to the Rocky Mountains that culminated in the annual rendezvous of fur trappers and traders. Miller's first major commission offered him an invaluable opportunity to be the first artist to record the grand caravan to the rendezvous, the mountain trappers and the Indian tribes from the far west and Rocky Mountain regions. This drawing is one of the original eighty-seven Miller executed during the expedition. Reconnoitering was eventually acquired by Bonamy Mansell Power who accompanied Stewart on an 1843 expedition to the Rockies.
