Catalogue Note

Samuel Jaudon, a prominent businessman in Philadelphia and later New York, was appointed the principal cashier of the Bank of the United States in 1837 and stationed in London.  According to Edward Biddle and Mantle Fielding, Sully painted two portraits of Jaudon.  The first was finished in 1838 and painted for Joseph Cowperthwaite, the second cashier of the bank.  The other portrait, painted in 1839 was a copy of the first.  The present painting is the original portrait.
