Catalogue Note

The Gloucester Marine Railways is a small shipyard on Rocky Neck which has been in existence since the mid-19th century.  It is a  commercial drydock which provides for the seasonal scraping, painting and repairing of the hulls of boats in the area and looks quite similar today as in the present painting.  The 'railways' refers to the heavy iron train track bolted to the wharf to aid in pulling marine craft out of the water.
