Catalogue Note

For a discussion of Plains sculptural art and spoons in particular see John C. Ewers, Plains Indian Sculpture, A Traditional Art From America's Heartland, Washington DC 1986, p. 174-177: "Spoons made from horns of the buffalo seem to have been common among the Plains Indians as were the ones of wood....Horn spoons with carved effigy handles seem to have been especially favored by the Teton or Western Sioux during the second half of the nineteenth century."
