Le personnage hermaphrodite adopte la pose caractéristique Tellem: debout sur une petite base circulaire, le corps droit, les bras levés vers le ciel encadrant le visage. La tension exprimée dans la verticalité de la pose est accentuée par la sobriété de l'ornementation. Le bois dur est recouvert d'une patine croûteuse, brun nuancé - faite de sang sacrificiel et de bouillie de mil.

Catalogue Note
Par « Tellem » - « Nous les avons trouvés » - les Dogon désignent les hommes qui habitaient les falaises de Bandiagara avant qu'ils ne peuplent à leur tour le site, à partir du XVe siècle (Leloup, 1994 : 144-146). Leur présence a été révélée par quelques vestiges - habitations, sanctuaires, squelettes et objets cultuels - préservés dans les grottes situées sur les flancs de la falaise.
Leurs statues, également désignées sous le terme de « Tellem », seraient liées, selon la tradition Dogon, aux rites de pluie, leurs bras levés vers le ciel étant interprétés comme un appel à Dieu afin qu'il envoie la pluie.
