Pagaie, îles Hawaii
Description
- Pagaie, îles Hawaii
- long. 102 cm
- 40 in
hoe, of classic form and considerable age, carved in a hard and dense wood, a short handle- ku'au- ending in a broad blade- laulau. The powerful equilibrium of the shape answers the shape of the blade (flat on the black/ convex on the front), with its finely bevelled edge. Deep brown patina. The end of the pole carries a trace of an old label.
Catalogue Note
See Buck (1957: 279, No. 197a) for a comparable paddle (only the blade of which is reproduced) in the Bishop Museum, Honolulu. According to Buck, a flat/convex blade and finely bevelled edge indicate an old paddle.
Highly characteristic of the Hawaiian Islands, these old paddles differ considerably from those elsewhere in Polynesia, which have different proportions and which are often entirely decorated with engraved motifs.
