Panier avec couvercle, Niihau , îles Hawaii

hina 'i lauhala, circulaire, offrant une très belle régularité de tressage, le décor caractérisé par l'insertion de petites bandes rouges de lauhala marquant le centre du couvercle et ponctuant avec élégance les côtés. L'intérieur a conservé une ancienne étiquette portant la mention manuscrite « Honolulu, Sandwich Islands ».

Nommée pawehe, la décoration  géométrique – spécialité des habitants de la petite île de Niihau – était plus spécifiquement appliquée aux gourdes et aux nattes. Pour la vannerie, la technique consistait à insérer des fines bandes rouges d'écorce de lauhala afin de rehausser la beauté géométrique du tressage. Les paniers en vannerie des îles Hawaii sont rares, et plus encore ceux qui, datant du XIX^e siècle, présentent – comme ici -  un très bon état de conservation.  

The geometric pahewe design, the specialty of the inhabitants of the small island of Niihau, was generally used on gourds and mats. When used for basketry, the technique involved inserting fine red lauhala bark bands into the weave, increasing the beauty of the basket's geometric design. Hawaiian woven baskets are rare, particularly 19^th century baskets such as the offered example, which remains in very good condition.
