Au parfait équilibre de la forme répond la beauté du décor géométrique, les lignes de teinte naturelle réservées, se détachant sur le fond sombre (black dye).  Il a conservé, une ancienne étiquette portant la mention manuscrite : « Hawaiian Calabash, n° 16 ».

Selon son précédent détenteur, elle aurait fait partie d'un ensemble de dix-huit calebasses envoyées en Californie pour être présentées à l'Exposition Universelle de 1915, à San Francisco.

According to its previous owner, this bowl was part of a group of eighteen calabashes exhibited at the 1915 Universal Exposition in San Francisco, California

Réalisé dans toutes les îles d'Hawaii, le décor géométrique nommé pawehe, ornant en particulier les calebasses, était la spécialité des habitants de la petite île de Niihau. Son élaboration était longue et délicate. Le motif géométrique était d'abord incisé, puis des enlevures pratiquées sur le reste de la surface externe. La calebasse était ensuite enduite d'un liquide acide préparé avec de l'écorce, et enfin le tannage achevé par enfouissement dans la vase.

Employed throughout the Hawaiian Islands, the geometric pahewe design, which was often used to decorate calabashes, was the specialty of the inhabitants of the small island of Niihau. The development of this design was a long and delicate process. The geometrical motif was first incised, and then cuts were made on the rest of the exterior. The calabash was then coated in an acidic preparation made with bark, before the process was finished by burying the calabash in mud.
