Boîte avec couvercle en calebasse, îles Hawaii

Ipu le'i pawehe, poho aho pawehe, servant à contenir des hameçons et/ou des lignes, découpée dans deux coloquintes afin de former le réceptacle et son couvercle - les deux parties liées par une cordelette de suspension. Elle est ornée, à la base et sur le couvercle, d'un décor géométrique sombre sur fond naturel (tan dye), aux dessins caractéristiques des îles Hawaii. Elle a conservé, une ancienne étiquette portant la mention manuscrite : « Hawaiian Calabash N° 6 »



Ipu le'i pawehe, poho aho pawede, used to hold hooks and/or fishing lines, cut into two parts to form the container and its lid, the two parts bound by a cord. The base and lid decorated with geometric motifs over a natural ground (tan dye), the design characteristic of the Hawaiian Islands. The interior with an old label marked 'Hawaiian Calabash No. 6.'

Selon son précédent détenteur, elle aurait fait partie d'un ensemble de dix-huit calebasses envoyées en Californie pour être présentées à l'Exposition Universelle de 1915, à San Francisco.

According to its previous owner, this container was part of a group of eighteen calabashes exhibited at the 1915 Universal Exposition in San Francisco, California.
