Umeke Kamani, of fine size, superbly worked from the heart of the wood. The perfect shape- flat bottom, and very fine walls which narrow towards the top- is complimented by the nuanced caramel coloured patina and the fine grain of the wood, the ondulations of which evoke Chinese moon-stones or abstract landscapes. Very fine dense kamani wood with fine grain. Embellished with several traditional restorations-poho along with butterfly repairs (pewa)and small pegs (kuini)

En plus de sa très grande beauté, ce bol se distingue par l'essence du bois dans lequel il a été sculpté. Mentionné dans les chants les plus anciens, le kamani est considéré dans toute la Polynésie comme un arbre sacré. Tiré du tronc, son bois dur de teinte brun rouge est utilisé en particulier pour la réalisation de réceptacles – la faible odeur qu'il dégage étant considérée comme idéale pour les plats entrant en contact avec l'alimentation.

This bowl is distinguished both by its great beauty and by the wood in which it is carved. Mentioned in the oldest folk songs, the kamani is considered to be a secret tree throughout Polynesia. The hard reddish brown wood taken from the trunk was often used for making bowls and other receptacles- its very faint smell being considered ideal for items which would come into contact with food
