Description
- Statue, Hemba septentrionaux
- haut. 56 cm
- 22 in
fragmentaire, le torse montrant le personnage masculin dans une attitude conventionnelle : les mains posées sur l'abdomen bulbeux, de part et d'autre du nombril. La puissance de la pose est accentuée par le mouvement des épaules épannelées, accompagnant les flancs creusés, et par la plénitude de la tête. L'ample front bombé domine la face creusée en cœur, sobrement animée par le tracé linéaire des yeux et de la bouche, aux lèvres étroites et parallèles, et par le dessin de la coiffure en large chignon à trois bandes, s'étirant jusqu'à la nuque. Très belle patine brune, profonde, rehaussée de pigments rouges.

Catalogue Note
François Neyt (1977 : 349), dans son étude ethno-morphologique de la statuaire Hemba, rattache cette statue au style dit "à tresses", localisé dans l'aire septentrionale du territoire Hemba (région du Maniema, au nord de la rivière Luika), et la compare en particulier à la tête de la collection Jef et René Vander Straete (idem : 342).
