Catalogue Note

The resurrection scene is one of the key events of Maya mythology and the eventful life of the Hero Twins. The rebirth of their father after the defeat of the rulers of Xibalba is the symbolic renewal of life, as the reborn lord represents maize sprouting from the earth. This is sometimes portrayed with the cracked carapace of a turtle representing the earth, with maize sprouting above.
See Robicsek and Hales (1981: vessel 117) for another codex example, and ibid, (figs. 57 and 58) for the scene in polychrome.
