Description

leaning forward, his contemplative and relaxed expression showing narrowed recessed eyes and open mouth, the face covered with distinctive eyemask and geometric designs around the chin, wearing a complete short sleeved tunic of net or loose weave, the coiffure with single lock on the forehead and plait flipped on the back of the head.

Catalogue Note

The large Type A Chinesco figures are a rare category of the Lagunillas style. They depict male and female figures of a uniform age or youthfulness, perhaps a specific period of adolescence surrounding initiation rites. See von Winning (1974: fig. 309), and Holsbeke and Arnault (1998: fig. 93) for the garment.
