Catalogue Note

Roy (1997: 364, text to fig.106) notes: "This large power figure in Mestach's study of the Songye (1985: 114, fig. 28) was, according to Mestach's sources, collected by European missionaries in Kananga [a city in the province Kasai-Occidental, outside of Songye territory] before 1900. Mestach speculates that it may have been carried by the Beneki in their migrations toward the southwest in 1887-1888, when they joined the Nsapo to avoid extermination by the more powerful Kalebwe. These migrations were the result of upheavals caused by the raids of Arab slave traders led by Tippu Tip in the 1870s and later exacerbated by encounters with Belgian colonial authority."
