Catalogue Note

The rare style of this figure shows strong stylistic influence from the neighbouring Songye peoples. Cf. the form of the legs and position of the hands with a Songye figure from the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University (Adams 1982: 106, fig. 72). However, the facial features, especially the double-outlines of the eyes suggest the present lot to be the work of a Lulua artist.
