Description

carved from elephant ivory (loxodonta africana), of oval hollowed form, the small pierced mouth showing teeth beneath an elongated raised nose bisecting the coffee-bean eyes, with incised circular motif on forehead; 'Kingungungungu' on old label and '173' in black pigment on reverse; fine dark honey brown patina

Reportedly collected in situ by Julien Gorju, Vicar and Bishop in the Congo, 1920-30s
James M. Silberman, Washington D.C., acquired from an acquaintance of the above, 1960s
