Catalogue Note

For related headcrest with animal caryatids from the southwest Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola region in the Jerome Joss collection see Dewey (1993: 56-59). The Chokwe, Yaka, Suku and Holo associate the use of headrests with male dignitaries and they are used for the protection of the elaborate coiffures of the chiefs (ibid.: 59).
