Description

  • Length: 89 cm
carved in hardwood of elongated ovoid form, the front decorated with broadly fluted linear designs divided into three sections to form a zig-zag motif infilled alternately with red and white earth pigments, the reverse replete with fine adze markings and further areas of fluted linear engraving and raised loop handle, old, shiny patina overall

Provenance

Reputedly collected by Constable Jack Ellis prior to 1910 and thence by descent. According to his descendents, Ellis relocated to Victoria from Western Australia in 1910 and took this shield with him

Condition

The wunda shield is in good condition overall. there are some fine hairline cracks on the reverse and minor areas of pigment loss.
