Description
- Length: 83 cm
carved in hardwood of elongated ovoid form, the gently curved convex front carved with fluted designs divided into three sections to form a zig-zag motif, the bands infilled alternately with red pigment, the reverse engraved with fluted striations and elegantly carved loop handle
Provenance
Acquired by the vendor in 1954 from a second-hand dealer in Londsdale Street, Melbourne
Condition
The pigments have faded and the edges of the shield have minor areas of damage from use. There are two holes on the surface which appear to have been caused by fire damage and there is a crack extending from the larger hole to the upper edge of the shield in the upper left hand register.
