finely constructed of cut white sea bird feathers bound into a cane openwork frame with string, the front framework decorated with traces of pink, blue, yellow, purple and green pigments, the reverse undecorated with two extended pieces of string for attachment to the head
Provenance
Acquired at Palm Island in 1931 by a tourist on a cruise ship travelling from Sydney to Cairns. According to the owner the head dress was purchased from a dancer on the island following a performance and was accidentally left in the care of her mother who in turn passed it to her.
Condition
The headdress was housed for many years behind glass in a frame and has recently been removed from it. It now has a purpose made professional stand. The framework/substructure is in very good order though th feathers have suffered discolouration, foxing and have become illformed over time.
