Catalogue Note

It is extremely rare to find Qianlong mark and period vases of this elegant bottle form decorated in underglaze blue only, although a similar piece, possibly the pair to the present vase, was sold at Christie's New York, 6th November 1980, lot 359.

Compare also two Qianlong blue and white vases of closely related form but with handles and painted with a different dragon design; one sold in our New York rooms, 28th November 1994, lot 349; and the other illustrated in John Ayers, The Baur Collection, vol. 4, Geneva, 1974, cat. no. A583.

The present vase is also related to a yellow-ground and underglaze blue bottle vase of the same form and decoration, from the Jarras Collection, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 20th November 1984, lot 429, again, 2nd November 1999, lot 593, and again in these rooms, 8th October 2006, lot 1055.
