Catalogue Note
It is unusual to find lemon-yellow glazed dishes exquisitely carved around the foot with the pattern of breaking waves, although a white-glazed dish of the same size and carved decoration but with flared angled sides was sold in our New York rooms, 1st June 1993, lot 344.
Compare also a smaller celadon-glazed dish carved with a variation of the stylised wave design, included in the Min Chiu Society exhibition Monochrome Ceramics of the Ming and Ch'ing Dynasties, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1977, cat. no. 72, sold in these rooms, 9th November 1982, lot 278; and another related celadon-glazed dish, formerly in the collection of C. K. Chang, sold in these rooms, 25th April 2004, lot 263. Another smaller moon-white glazed dish of closely related form and carved decoration, from the Hong Kong Museum of Art collection, was included in the exhibition, The Wonders of the Potter's Palette, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1984, cat. no. 59.
