Catalogue Note

The Edinburgh-born painter of rustic subjects Alexander George Fraser studied at the Trustees Academy under John Graham. He was much influenced by the work of Sir David Wilkie, with whom he worked during his formative years completing many of Wilkie's paintings by inserting his own still life details. In 1840 he was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Academy and two years later his picture Namaan Cured of Leprosy was voted 'Picture of the Year' by public vote. Tragically by the early 1850s Fraser was forced to cease painting due to ill-health.
