Catalogue Note
The watercolour would have had a particular resonance with Sir David, as his ancestor Sir Walter Scott of Buccleuch received Hermitage Castle from James VI of Scotland in 1594. It remained in the possession of the family until 1930 when it was given to the nation. In the eighteenth century Hermitage provided the romantic subsidiary title taken by the third son of 1st Duke of Buccleuch, Viscount Hermitage. In the early nineteenth century, repairs to the castle were carried out by the 5th Duke of Buccleuch.
