Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been relined. PAINT SURFACE Old patches of stable craquelure in places. A small chip of paint to the upper centre. Otherwise good overall condition. ULTRAVIOLET UV light reveals old retouching to a stretcher mark across the upper border and the suggestion of some minor spots elsewhere under an opaque varnish. FRAME Held in a lightly decorated gold composite frame with minor losses.

Catalogue Note

Arthur Davis is better known as a painter of landscapes, particularly of views in the south of England. He exhibited at the British Institution and in 1872 he exhibited a picture at the Royal Academy. He also painted animal subjects, an example being Waiting for Master of 1878 (Sotheby's, New York, 1 June 2000, lot 94).
