Catalogue Note
The Amelia, a British 38 gun frigate, was commanded by Captain the Hon. Frederick Paul Irby, son of Lord Boston. The French frigate, Arethuse, was commanded by Captain Bouvet. The action commenced on the 7 February. Schetky shows the two vessels side by side. The French forces twice attempted to board and were twice repelled by the British. The engagement was inconclusive but resulted in the death of many men on both sides. The Amelia sailed to the nearby port of Madeira, and was retired from active service in May 1813.
