Condition

Sheet: The sheet has been laid down. Along the left and right hand edges, there are two banded areas where the paper has slightly discoloured. This may have been caused by previous mounting. There are also one or two minor foxmarks, located away from the centre of the image. Medium: The colours have remained strong and fresh. Frame: Held in a simple gilt-wood frame.

Catalogue Note

John Maguire was a prominent Irish politician and journalist. A native of Cork he was elected as Member of Parliament for the borough of Dungarvan in 1847 and again between 1851 and 1865. A strong supporter of Daniel O'Connell (1775-1847), he later represented Cork for the Independent Irish Party until his death in 1870. As well as his political career he also founded the celebrated Cork Examiner.  In 1866 he visited America and subsequently published his famous book, The Irish in America.  He was feted at a banquet at the celebrated Delmonico's restaurant in New York.

Maguire was also an ardent catholic and made three visits to Rome to meet Pope Pius IX.  The latter made him a Knight Commander of St Gregory in recognition of his book on the Pontificate.
