Condition

SHEET The sheet has been stuck down on to card. Light discolouration around the edges, underneath the mount. MEDIUM Good condition. FRAME Held in a simple white painted wooden frame; under glass.

Catalogue Note

William Johnstone was born into a farming family in Denholme in Roxburghshire and was a childhood friend of the artist Tom Scott who encouraged him to paint. He attended classes at the Edinburgh College of Art and later in Paris after winning a travelling scholarship in 1925. His work was inspired by the Cubists and Surrealists, and the influence of Wyndham Lewis was strong. He became an influential Principal at the Camberwell School of Art.
