STRUCTURE Original canvas in good overall condition. PAINT SURFACE There are areas of dirt that may benefit from a light clean, and areas where the varnish seems to have discoloured but generally the paint surface is in good overall condition. ULTRAVIOLET UV light reveals no sign of retouching. FRAME Held in a gold painted wooden frame.

Claude Rogers was born in London and studied at the Slade between 1925 and 1928 where his contemporaries included William Coldstream and Rodrigo Moynihan, all artists associated with the founding of the Euston Road School in the late 1930s. Rogers began to exhibit with the London Group and the London Artists' Association in the early 1930s. He taught at Camberwell School of Art in 1945, lectured at the Slade between 1948 and 1963, after which he became professor of fine art at the University of Reading. The Whitechapel Gallery held a major retrospective of the artist's work in 1973.
